We know that Ben Affleck, star of The Town and Good Will Hunting, will don the cape and cowl as Batman in Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Batman vs. Superman film. But what we don’t yet know is what the new Batmobile will be.
Rumours this week may have given us a clearer idea what the new Dark Knight’s ride could look like, though. Unlike the military, utilitarian ‘Tumbler’ Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s recent Dark Knight trilogy, Batman vs. Superman could be going back to the character’s roots.
A source claiming to be close to the film project calling themselves Dr Detroit (sounds like one for Batman’s rogues gallery) has told Batman-On-film that the new Batmobile will be based on an old Cadillac.
The doctor speculates that it may be modelled after a 1943 Cadillac convertible (pictured), as that’s the model which was used in the very first live action appearance of the Dark Knight, in the Batman television serial from the 1940s.

It’ll take some gadgets and a lick of black paint to bring it up to scratch, but the old Cadillac could be an interesting take on the Batmobile, as well as giving us an early idea of Snyder’s vision for the 2015 film, in which Batman and Superman will face off.
If the rumours are to be believed, and Bruce Wayne will be tracking down the scum of Gotham in an old Cadillac, there are a few other models that I’d suggest fit the role better. Here’s a few I have in mind…

This 1957 Cadillac has a sleeker and more winged look, more fitting of the Dark Knight. Earlier this year, the very first convertible version of the ’57 Cadillac sold for £649,000 – which is chump change for a millionaire playboy like Bruce Wayne.

If we’re going for nostalgia, this is the kind of Batmobile you could see Adam West and Burt Ward’s Batman and Robin in – and this one already has the interior for it. All it needs is a re-spray, a jet engine for the back and a batphone in the front!

Batman is known as The World’s Greatest Detective, so if Zack Snyder decides to pay homage to that fact and wants to go with a bit of a hard-boiled type thing, this 1976 Caddy might be low key enough to work.
With a bit of work and little modernisation, it could even look like the Batmobile from Grant Morrison’s Batman RIP storyline.

Okay, so it’s not old – but look at that grille! This is more of what I’d like to see – a modern, more aggressive looking vehicle that looks like it can outrun a GCPD cop car and take some damage. It’d need the windows blacking out and some extra bodywork, but I can see it!
Annoyingly, teen pop caterwauler Justin Bieber already has a ‘Batmobile’ Cadillac which looks pretty cool. I take solace in the fact that the Dark Knight probably wouldn’t condone such imitation.
